Located in the tourism precinct of Fremantle, Fremantle Prison is the largest convict built structure in Australia. In recognition of its significant heritage value it was the first Western Australian property to be included on the National Heritage List and was recently inscribed on to the World Heritage List.

Fremantle Prison’s Main Cell Block is the largest and most intact convict built cell range of the former British Empire. In 2010, Fremantle Prison undertook a major conservation project to protect and restore the significant internal fabric of the Main Cell Block. This project, carried out by heritage architects and artisans, was overwhelmingly successful in protecting the significant heritage values and fabric of the Main Cell Block.

The prison is a major Western Australian heritage tourist attraction delivering a diverse range of unforgettable experiences. Guided tours are designed specifically for visitors seeking a heritage tourism activity. The popular Doing Time tour through the Main Cell Block provides visitors with an insight into the life of prisoners during the convict and modern eras to educate visitors about the site’s history and to foster an appreciation of the significance of our cultural heritage.
