In 1890, Western Australia was granted responsible government. John Forrest became the State’s first Premier, 1890 – 1901.
From this time onwards State Governors continued to be appointed, but their powers were limited to those of the Executive Council.
In 1901 the States and Territories federated under a national constitution to become members of the Commonwealth of Australia. All the States appoint their own Governors with limited powers.
