Ownership

Fremantle Prison is vested in the Minister for Works on behalf of the Western Australian Government. The Minister takes advice on matters of future direction for the Prison from the Fremantle Prison Advisory Committee. The day to day management and operation of the site is carried out by the Department of Housing and Works.

Members of the Fremantle Prison Advisory Committee are appointed by the Minister.

The conservation and management of the site is guided by the Australia ICOMOS, Charter for Places of Cultural Significance (the Burra Charter) and Fremantle Prison: A policy for its conservation (James Semple Kerr 1992, revised 1998).

Future use

As part of the management policies for the long-term sustainability of the site as a heritage place, new uses have been developed for a number of buildings within the precinct.

Leases include tourist accommodation, small business development, education, and community ventures.
