Fremantle Prison Heritage Precinct Master Plan ![]()
Master Plan launched
The Department of Housing and Works has engaged a team of consultants to prepare a Master Plan for the Fremantle Prison Heritage Precinct. The aim of this Master Plan is to produce an integrated framework that can be used to guide and set realistic priorities for future use and development of the place, including conservation, interpretation, commercial enterprise, tourism, landscape and maintenance. Fremantle Prison Heritage Precinct, which was decommissioned as Western Australia's maximum-security gaol in 1991, is now operated by the State Government as a multiple use heritage precinct featuring a tourist operation and related services, educational facilities including a TAFE annexe, tourist accommodation and a range of community uses. It is recognised as a place of very significant cultural heritage, and is entered in the state and national registers of heritage places. The place is being considered for possible submission for inscription in the World Heritage List. |

Of particular importance to the outcome of the project is the engagement of stakeholders and the wider community in a comprehensive consultation process that enables interested people to share their ideas and aspirations for this significant heritage place.
